Jieun Yang presented at Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC)’s annual conference Reconnect + Recalibrate. Organized under the conference track topic Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and Diversity/ Equity/ Inclusion, “Practice of Care: Designing for the Invisible” explored the intersection between interiors, architecture, and urban design with a critical reexamination of work and workplace by turning attention to the invisible labor typically excluded from the conversation. The presentation featured student works from Fall 2020 Parsons School of Design Interior Design studio.

Presented with Times Square Arts and Museum of Arts and Design, Bloom is open to the public with an unveiling ceremony on February 9, 2022. Bloom will be the epicenter of activities on Valentine’s Day in Times Square, including weddings, surprise proposals, and a vow renewal ceremony.

“We wanted to create a project that captures collective resiliency - through the hardships and triumphant moments - and how love, commitment, and hope are the driving forces. It’s almost unreal to experience the energy of Times Square this morning. We’ve come a long way together since 2020, and never have we so acutely felt what a great privilege it is to be surrounded by everyday New Yorkers who didn’t give up, looked out for each other, and became a steady presence of love and assurance for someone. So this is for you - our teachers, transit and food service workers, healthcare workers, parents, partners, friends, and family. Just as each pipe of Bloom works as a vital connector to hold up the structure, you matter. We see you and love you. This project is a love letter to you and to this city we share together.”

Set to be publicly unveiled on February 9, Habitat Workshop’s Bloom will celebrate the enduring strength of collective love. Bloom will be fabricated by IDEKO and on view in Duffy Square from February 9 to March 9.

“We are honored for the opportunity to create a project that recognizes human fragility and strength, especially after a few years of struggle to care for ourselves and others in this overwhelming and disruptive world. Multiple sections of linked pipes form a buoyant cloud with a heart-shaped core blooming from each section’s center, and the aggregate of each interlocking connector provides strength for the overall structure. Bloom is an offering of hope and a reminder that we must find vivacity amid the darkness.”

Jieun Yang presented at AIA Tri-State 2021 Conference Return to the Future!. The AIA Unified Crisis Task Force team also includes Soluri Architecture, Plastarc, and The Design + Architecture. The presentation discusses lessons learned and best practices from the COVID-19 pandemic to reimagine how to create a more flexible, diverse, and distributed workplace that is more adaptable and resilient to future uncertainties.

Joining nearly 50 fellows to advance proposals for a more vibrant equitable streetscape, Jieun Yang participates in the Urban Design Forum’s 2021-2022 Streets Ahead program in the Climate Working Group. Streets Ahead is a year-long inquiry into the future of city streets, focusing on the five key lenses: Commerce, Care, Climate, Culture, and Continuity. The program aims to imagine how streets can be reclaimed to advance economic recovery, environmental justice, and racial equity. In addition, the Climate Working Group will specifically investigate how we can retool street design to confront the impacts of the climate crisis.

During the pandemic school year, we worked with Horizons on the Hudson, a Newburgh public school, to get the students excited about their city by collecting placemaking ideas for Muchattoes Lake. Their unbound imagination was then translated into drawings and renderings by Yale alumni architects as a part of the Yale Day of Service. Joining six other early- to mid-career architects from around the world, Jieun Yang was selected as 2021 Architects-in-Residence at Art Omi: Architecture. Jieun worked to develop a project titled Project | Project, to explore purposeful slowing down in the process of making, observing, and documenting through using multiple scales of iterations on camera obscura. The ongoing research can be found here on Habitat Workshop’s website.

We are honored to announce that Jieun will be joining this year's jury of the internationally acclaimed CODAawards. Each year the jury includes 18 international leaders from the art and design industry. Jieun will be joining them this year to evaluate entries across ten categories relating to the integration of commissioned art into interior, architectural, or public spaces.

Signal Park was selected as the finalist for the AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction)’s 2021 Forge Prize. The prize presents emerging architects with an opportunity to explore the dynamic characteristics of structural steel and how their visions may fit into our future buildings. Jeff Pate, P.E. from Owen Steel Company served as a mentor.

Presented as a launch of AIA WHV’s Common Ground mentorship program, Jieun Yang presented the case study of Reimagine Lake Street Corridor project in Newburgh for The Power of Incremental Change. The presentation highlighted how grassroots efforts can make a difference in the community, explain the value of being civically engaged, and how these projects can help foster a professional network for future work and collaboration. This project is an ongoing collaboration with Dept of Small Interventions and Brandt:Haferd.

Lake Street Corridor project has been selected as Editors’ Picks for the 2020 AN Best of Design Awards in the Unbuilt Urban Design category. The Architect’s Newspaper’s Annual Best Of Design Awards is a unique project-based awards program that showcases great buildings, building elements, interiors, and installations. We are especially thankful to Dept of Small Interventions for our collaboration on the community design charrette and all participants at the charrette. Discussions from the charrette became the inspiration for this project. Stay tuned for more ongoing collaborations with Dept of Small Interventions, Brandt : Haferd, and Outdoor Promise.

Jieun Yang was featured in Interior Design Women in Design issue. The book/magazine features female interior designers, product designers, manufacturers, architects, and industry leaders. In addition to the honor of being included alongside so many inspiring colleagues, a portion of the proceeds from the publication has been donated to Girls Who Code.

Odd Lots is featured in the Institute for Public Architecture’s latest publication Live / Work for the Workforce. The research and design investigate oddly shaped undevelopable lots in New York City and was developed during the IPA’s 2016 residency program.

Fellows from the IPA’s 2016 residency, including Habitat Workshop’s Jieun Yang, spoke about their processes during the book launch event and Q&A session.

Habitat Workshop’s collaboration with Dept of Small Interventions and Calderón Architecture & Design Studio in leading the participatory design charrette in Newburgh, NY was featured in the Mid Hudson Times. The work focused on multiple scales of immediate urban design tactics and long-range plans to cultivate Lake St. corridor as a safe and pedestrian-friendly zone with potential for future economic developments capitalizing on its asset as a connector to main green infrastructure assets.

Habitat Workshop participated in panel discussion on a collective conversation around the common ground of building practices at the GSAPP Incubator. 

Along with Mustafa Faruki, Nile Greenberg, Marcelo López-Dinardi and moderated by Michelle Young, Jieun Yang discusses experiences of being a part of the GSAPP Incubator, and the challenges and opportunities facing architecture students and practitioners within the current cultural and economic landscape.

Layered Fragments by Habitat Workshop has been named a 2018 NYCxDESIGN Awards Honoree in the Architectural Installation / Pop-Up category. The program celebrates outstanding talent across major areas of design such as architecture, interiors, furnishings, lighting, and technology, and unifies more than 500 events taking place during NYCxDESIGN, New York City's showcase of global design.
 

Habitat Workshop presented current works and discussed methodology of the studio's process at the GSAPP Incubator.  Functioning as a platform for entrepreneurship and expanded modes of practice, the GSAPP Incubator, located in NEW INC, is a launch pad for new ideas and projects about architecture, culture, and the city.
